Thursday 4-14 RC Elementary School

San Pedro Roman Catholic Elementary School is known locally as RC.
Students lining up to start the new school day.
Teachers preparing for class. There is no air conditioning in most Belize schools. They have huge windows with louvres on each side of the room to allow the breeze to flow through. The doors are always open.
The school day begins!
One of our UNCW interns, Jessie, begins a language arts class. The students are working on group and individual writing projects.

Looking out the door of the classroom into the Carribean Sea! Yeah, you know what I'm thinking.

This student is beginning the final draft of her assignment. There are no computers. All drafts are hand written.

A student sharing his writing with me. He wrote a fantastic historical fiction story about the early Maya culture and good versus evil. His story won the writing contest!

These three young men were working on a project for a poster contest.
This topic of their project was the importance of reading and completing school.

This is Candy Armstrong and me. Ms. Armstrong is the Ministry of Education representative for San Pedro schools.

I know that I only visited RC for one day, but I was amazed at how closely aligned these kids were with students there same in age in the U.S. They seemed to be just as globally aware and have the same general knowledge that U.S. kids have. How is that possible? These kids don't have access to technology like U.S. kids do (none at school, and most don't at home). Is their knowledge gained from just watching television or movies? Most U.S. television channels are broadcast here. This would be an interesting study.
